The Colombo Crimes Division recovered a Buddha statue of archaeological value, which went missing from the Sri Lankarama temple at Ananda Girl’s School Road, Pagoda Road, Pitakotte. The statue weighs 45 kgs and is worth Rs 50 million.
An investigation was initiated consequent to a complaint made on January 20, 2011, by Dr. Hunupalagama Vajira Thera, who resided in the Temple.
This statue was found at the Rasavehera Temple in the Meegalewa police division. Police say that Rahula Thera, head of the Rasawehera Temple of Kalangkutty, had brought this statue to the Temple from the Wellawa Temple in Asgiriya, Kandy, for safekeeping, after the monk in charge of the temple withdrew.
