The Court of Appeal issued an interim injunction preventing the enforcement of a Cabinet decision by the previous government to purchase 750,000 passports from two private companies.
This order was made on September 26 following the consideration of a writ petition filed by Epic Lanka, which challenged the purchase of the passports. The injunction is effective until October 1. The case was heard before Appeal Court Judge Mohammed Laffar Thaheer.
Appearing on behalf of the petitioner, President’s Counsel Viran Corea stated that the previous government had decided to purchase 750,000 passports from two private companies based on a Cabinet decision made on September 2. Corea pointed out that the decision was taken without following the proper procurement process, making it unlawful. He requested Court to issue a writ nullifying the decision. After reviewing the facts, the judge issued the interim injunction. The former Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, the Secretary of the Ministry, and several others were named as respondents in the case.
