The Cabinet has approved a proposal to allocate 2.5 acres of uncultivated land from the Sorana Plantation, under Kotagala Plantation (Pvt) Ltd, for the development of a playground for students of Sri Pali Campus, which is affiliated with the Colombo University, Cabinet Spokesman Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.
He was speaking at the weekly Cabinet Media briefing held at the Government Information Department.
With nearly 850 students currently enrolled, the lack of a proper playground for sports and recreational activities has been a significant concern. To address this issue, discussions were held with relevant parties, leading to an agreement to transfer the uncultivated land adjacent to the campus for use as a public playground.
Kotagala Plantation (Pvt) Ltd. has granted consent to release the land without any compensation, and the Secretary to the General Treasury, as the holder of the golden shares of the property, has also approved the allocation.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Prime Minister in her capacity as the Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Minister, aims to enhance student facilities and promote physical activities at the campus.
