Cabinet nod for Indigenous Medicine National Policy in SL 2024-2034

The Cabinet has approved the implementation of the Indigenous Medicine National Policy (IMNP) 2024-2034 in Sri Lanka, which has been formulated by a panel of experts through a wider participatory process.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said that the Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by the President in his capacity as Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policy Minister to implement this policy.

“The Legal framework for the practice of Indigenous Medical Systems within the country has been provided by the Indigenous Act No 31 of 1961 as amended by the Indigenous Act No 19 of 2023.

However, a single national policy which guides the national policy direction for the Indigenous Medicine service has not been formulated so far.

The necessity of IMNP has arisen within the mainstream of National Health Policy to resolve the issues emerging at present in supplying the services and to offer quality and strong medical systems to the future generation through protection of Indigenous Medical Systems.
