The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) urges individuals to promptly report any incidents of unauthorized access to their mobile phones and computers by cybercriminals who encrypt files and data and demand ransom for their release.

A spokesperson for CERT, speaking to the Daily News explained that such incidents are known as ransomware attacks. They warned that accessing links and attachments from unknown emails or SMS messages can make mobile phones or computers vulnerable to cybercrime.

It is essential to remain vigilant against such cybercrime at all times and to avoid opening or accessing emails and SMS messages from unknown individuals. CERT emphasized the importance of installing antivirus software on computers and regularly backing up mobile phones and computers. Keeping all software updated can also help protect against ransomware attacks, the spokesman said.
