Certificates awarded to undergraduates who completed Short Course on Parliamentary Functions and Procedures
The certificate awarding ceremony of the short course on Parliamentary Functions and Procedures conducted by the Parliament of Sri Lanka for the undergraduates of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka was held recently at the university premises in Oluvil.
Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, Secretary General of Parliament participated as the chief guest and Vice Chancellor of South Eastern University, Professor A. Ramis and several others were also present.
This short course was organized by the Public Outreach Division of the Department of Communication of Parliament of Sri Lanka with the objective of providing a comprehensive understanding to the university students about the parliamentary system.
Former Director of Administration of Parliament Ms. G. Tachchanarani, Librarian of Parliament Mr. Siyat Ahmed and Public Outreach Officer Mr. Yashri Mohammed joined the short course as resource persons. This short course conducted for the students of the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Arts, South Eastern University of Sri Lanka included lectures and practical activities in the fields of Parliament and its legislative process, Parliamentary traditions, committees, public participation etc.
Addressing the students, the Secretary General of Parliament emphasized that the youth community has a special responsibility to strengthen the democratic governance system. Accordingly, she pointed out the importance of a broad knowledge of politics and parliamentary system. The Secretary General stated that the Parliament of Sri Lanka is already following the Open Parliamentary Concept for broad youth participation and that programs such as increasing the youth participation in the committees as well as implementing internship training programs in the Parliament for selected students from the universities are already in place to expand the youth participation in the Parliament.
Also, the Vice-Chancellor of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, Prof. A Ramees, said that it is extremely important to continue such programs in every university, in which the students participated very enthusiastically.
Professor M.M Fazil, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Southeastern University of Sri Lanka, Dr. M.A Jabar, Head of the Department of Political Science, and a group of lecturers were also present on this occasion.
Librarian of Parliament of Sri Lanka Mr. Siyat Ahmed, Public Outreach Manager of the Communication Department of the Parliament Ms. Budhini Ramanayake, Principle Officer and Coordinating Secretary to the Secretary General of Parliament Ms. Sujivi Gamage, Public Outreach Officers of the Parliament Mr. Yashri Mohammed, Ms. Ishara Wickramasinghe, Mr. Duminda Wickramasinghe, Public Outreach Office Coordinator Mr. Piyasiri Amarasinghe, The senior officer of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) Ms. Tharanga Gunasinghe were also present on this occasion.
Following the program, a cordial discussion was held between the Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera and the Vice-Chancellor of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, Prof. A Ramees on the parliamentary process and this short course.
This Short Course on Parliamentary Functions and Procedures was conducted with the financial support of USAID and the support of National Democratic Institute (NDI).
