In a thrilling race at the Nestomalt All-island School Games Marathon held in Galle last Saturday, KY Chamindi from Makandura Maha Vidyalaya in the Southern Province emerged victorious in the girls’ 5km category. The marathon, sponsored by Nestomalt and organized by the Ministry of Education, showcased Chamindi’s impressive performance as she completed the 5km race in just 18 minutes and 51 seconds.
Chamindi’s achievement was no small feat, as she outpaced her competitors, including Tharushi Udara from Matugama Ananda Shasthralaya in the Western Province, who finished at 18 minutes and 57 seconds, securing the second position. The third spot went to Samindi Kavindya of Nimala Maria Girls Schools in Jaela (Western Province) with a time of 19 minutes and 6 seconds. This event also played a crucial role in the Ministry of Education’s initiative to create a 40-member national pool for long-distance runners.
The last 10 members were selected from the competitive 5km girls’ race. Other notable participants in the race included Miyurika Manel of Walagedara Maha Vidyalaya in Matugama, who claimed the fourth position. Chalanai Kaushalya of Ihalagama Sumangala Vidyalaya, Deshani Piyumika of Pitadeniya Maha Vidyalaya, Tharushi Dewmini of Sri Sasanachandra Maha Vidyalaya, DP Sewwandi of Thuruliya Jinarathana Maha Vidyalaya, Pabusha Chamodi of Eheliyagoda Sudarshi Vidyalaya, and Rusiru Sadiksha of Sudarshi Maha Vidyalaya in Galle secured the 5th to 10th positions, respectively.
