The Poultry Industry Association has agreed to sell a kilogram of skinned chicken at Rs.1,250 a kilo in all supermarkets.
A discussion related to reducing the price of chicken meat and eggs was held at the Ministry last Friday (1) by Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera. All the large scale poultry and eggs industrialists participated in that discussion.
The Minister said the government has approved the import of another 91 million eggs from India to control the price of eggs in the country. The minister emphasized that if the price of chicken meat is not reduced, the government will have to import chicken meat from India to protect the consumers.
Although our country is self-sufficient in chicken meat and eggs, the increase in the price of eggs and chicken has become a problem for the protein needs of the country. Therefore, in order to protect this industry, the price of eggs and chicken meat must be reduced, the minister also pointed out. Accordingly, it has agreed to reduce the price of one kilogram of chicken meat with skin to Rs.1,250 from today.
The industrialists also requested the consumers to inform Ajith Weerasinghe of the Poultry Industry Association by calling 0712-732679 if any super store is selling at a higher price.
In addition to this, since the industrialists have been granted maize import licenses for the production of chicken feed, the price of chicken meat will be further reduced as soon as the relevant maize stocks are received. He also agreed to give the customers the benefit of the rupee’s appreciation against the dollar.
Meanwhile, the egg producers emphasized that since more than 3.42 million chicks have been introduced to all the chicken farms, the production of eggs in our country will increase rapidly by the month of December, and accordingly, the price of eggs can be kept at a price between 30-35 rupees.
Minister Amaraweera said he will submit a report to the Cabinet regarding the current progress of the egg and poultry industry and the strengthening of the local industry.
The minister also informed industrialists to take steps to further reduce poultry products as the government has the responsibility to protect the local industrialist as well as the consumer.
The minister also emphasized that it is not the government’s policy to fulfill the country’s need for eggs or chicken by undermining this local industry and importing it.
Bt the local industrialists should also think about the consumers of the country rather than making undue profits, and the government has taken steps to provide facilities to protect this industry.
The minister also mentioned that this is why poultry and egg producers were given priority in the granting of maize import licenses for animal feed.
Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe and others participated in this discussion.
