CID ordered to expedite probe in Rs.20 Mn fraud case

The Criminal Investigation Department was ordered yesterday by the Mt.Lavinia Magistrate’s Court to expedite the investigations against three suspects including the Jaffna Southwest Regional Council Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) candidate and his wife, who are suspected of defrauding more than Rs.20 million through the cheques of the company they worked for.

Mt.Lavinia Magistrate Kosala Senadheera made the order when the complaint against the suspects Karupaiah Morgan Sundaram, who is said to have appeared as a Local Council candidate this year his wife Navaratne Raza Hansapriya and Arun de Nathan Anoshan, was taken up before the Court yesterday.

The Criminal Investigation Department informed court that the investigation has not been completed as it is necessary to record the statements of several other suspects regarding the incident.

These investigations commenced based on a complaint filed by Sivaraja Thumilan, who is the owner of the well-known construction company in Nugegoda in 2018 that the three suspects, who were the chief planner, engineer and accountant of his company had defrauded the company’s cash by cheques.

The Magistrate asked why the investigations had not been concluded for five years and ordered that the investigations be completed immediately and presented facts to Court.

President’s Counsel Anura Maddegoda appearing for the aggrieved company made submissions and sought from Court to inform the Police to conclude the investigation which has been going on for five years.

President’s Counsel Ajith P. Pathirana appearing for the suspects made submissions and stated that there is no case against the defendants.

After considering submissions made by both parties, the Mt.Lavinia Magistrate fixed the case for January 26, 2024 and ordered to inform the Court regarding the progress of the investigations.
