
Police suspect that a claim alleging explosives had been planted at the Kandy District Secretariat was an attempt to create public unrest.
In a statement issued this morning (27), police said further investigations into the incident will be conducted by the Computer Crimes Investigation Division (CID).
An email received by the Kandy District Secretariat yesterday (26) claimed that explosives had been planted at five locations within the premises. Following a notification to the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Kandy Division, a joint search operation was launched involving officers from the Kandy Police Station, the Police Special Task Force bomb disposal unit, the Police K9 unit, and the Army bomb disposal unit.
The search operation was carried out from morning until evening on December 26, 2025. No suspicious or explosive materials were found during the operation.
Police said they believe the threat was aimed at causing public unrest and confirmed that the CID will continue investigations into the matter.
