Colombo University’s Demography Department recently celebrated its 50th anniversary by conducting the World Population Day Celebration – 2023 in collaboration with the UNFPA and the Population Association of Sri Lanka under the theme ‘Unleashing the Power of Gender Equality: Uplifting the Voices of Women and Girls to Unlock Our World’s Infinite Possibilities’. Colombo University, Acting Vice Chancellor and Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Lasantha Manawadu, UNFPA Sri Lanka, Acting Country Representative, Sharika Cooray, Head, Department of Demography, Prof. Manori K. Weeratunge and Population Association of Sri Lanka, President, Prof. Sunethra Perera were also present.
Making the keynote speech under the topic of ‘Healthy Lifestyles for Well-being and Happiness’, Colombo University, Department of Community Medicine and Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Shreenika De Silva Weliange emphasized how good health and well-being direct all nations to lead a happy life which indirectly make more opportunities for them to maintain a good health and awareness about the health rights as it will support women and girls to have more power and open their voices to win their rights.
Demography Department Head, Colombo University, Prof. Manori K. Weeratunga and Senior Lecturer Dr. Kumudika Boyagoda also spoke at the event.
University undergraduates also participated in oratory and poster competitions.
