Colombo University Leo Club students help Senior citizens via ‘Senehe Yathra’
In addition to the general educational activities the students of Leo Club of Colombo University under its ‘Senehe Yathra’ social service initiative recently launched a social service project to assist differently – abled elderly citizens currently residing at ‘ Rewatha Mapiya Sewana Elderly Home, Bandaragama in the Kalutara District.
The programme was conducted Under the Sahurda Yathra project, initiated by Colombo University five years ago. Accordingly the members of the University Leo club visited the elders’ home with a medical team headed by DMO, Bandaragama District Hospital Dr. J.P. Subasinghe. At the beginning the doctors conducted a special medical check- up and thereafter physiotherapy sessions on all 14 disabled elders at the Elders Home. The doctors also paid a special attention towards the health conditions of several elders who were affected by Down’s Syndrome.
During the brief stay in the Elders Home the doctors while checking the medical conditions of elders also had a cordial chat with them as it gave them a little comfort.
In addition the University team conducted many entertainment programmes and fun activities to give elders the most needed happiness and joy. The Leo team also gifted the elders with essential gifts such as gas cookers, blankets, bed sheets, pillowcases and also snacks and beverages. Making a brief speech on the occasion University Leo club member Yashmi Shamindi thanked the medical team and also the matron of the elders home Malani Perera for extending their fullest support and the co-operation to make the brief programme a success. She said the Colombo University Leo club wishes to conduct such valuable projects in the future too.
