Concealing information about terrorism an offence carrying a seven-year prison term – GL
MP Prof. G.L. Peiris said on Monday that a person concealing information on any act of terrorism is liable for a seven-year prison term under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and former President Maithripala Sirisena was the country’s President, Commander-in-Chief as well as Defence Minister at the time when the Easter Sunday attacks took place in 2019.
He said this at a press conference held in Colombo on Monday (1).
Prof. Peiris said that the former President’s announcement about the Easter Sunday attacks has created a problematic situation and no one can understand as to why he delayed to reveal information if he had the information.
Prof. Peiris said that close attention should be paid to the issuance of such statements when the elections are about to be held. He said that if new measures are taken regarding the Easter attacks, the Attorney General will have the power to do so.
He further said that the Opposition is working to build a broad alliance in the upcoming elections, but no such discussions have been held with former President Sirisena so far.
