A Police officer has been suspended for reportedly leaving his duty firearm, a T-56 weapon, and four rounds of ammunition, at a GCE Advanced Level Examination centre in Kilinochchi where he was deployed for duty, and going on a personal errand.

After the matter had been reported to higher authorities, the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Kilinochchi Division had taken steps to suspend the constable.

A sergeant along with this constable had been deployed for security at the examination centre, last Saturday.

Police said that the officer had reported to duty in the morning with a T-56 firearm and four ammunition magazines containing 120 rounds of ammunition, from the Police station.

Shortly after reporting for duty, the officer had left the school premises and had left behind his T-56 firearm in a school building. At a subsequent investigation it was revealed that the officer had left his firearm at the duty post and had left without informing any superior officer. As a result he has been suspended, Police sources said.
