Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced in Parliament yesterday that the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) will not be reconvened until further notice.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that a meeting of the COPE Committee had been called at 1 pm yesterday and its members MP S.M. Marikkar and MP Rauf Hakeem will not be able to attend as Muslim religious services will be held at that time. He also urged the Speaker to intervene in the matter.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, who spoke after the comments presented in Parliament regarding the COPE Committee by MPs, stated that not only the COPE Committee meeting scheduled to be held at 1 pm yesterday, but COPE Committee meetings will be suspended until further notice.
Chief Opposition Whip MP Lakshman Kiriella urged the Speaker to hold the scheduled COPE committee meeting at 2 pm.
However, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said that the relevant meetings will be held again after addressing the issues that have arisen in the COPE Committee.
