Couple jump, girl drowns in river

A team of Navy divers is assisting police find the body of a young girl believed to have drowned after jumping into the river Mahaweli with her boyfriend in Mahiyanganaya on Thursday (16) evening.

Police said that the girl residing in Gasgolla,Rideemaaliyadda off Mahiyanganaya with her boyfriend jumped into the river, following her and he was able to swim to land. It is reported that the girl had left home in the morning saying that she was going to attend a tuition class at Mahiyanganaya.

The boy had managed to swim out of the water and was later admitted to hospital for treatment.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the police.
