The Colombo Magistrate’s Court while determining that the death of the university student Chaturi Hansika Mallikaarachchi (24), a third-year student at the University’s Faculty of Science at the Race Course in Colombo recently was due to excessive bleeding from a wound in the neck caused by stabbing ordered the Kurunduwatta Police to conduct investigations and report to the Court.
The student arrested and remanded for allegedly murdering the girl who is in remand was not present in Courts.
The Prisons Superintendent submitted a letter to Court, presenting psychiatric reports that the suspect university student is not in a mature state of mind to appear before the Court.
Student Don Mithun Abeysinghe from the Faculty of Science of the University of Colombo, giving evidence said that the murdered girl was a student from his batch at the university.
He also stated that he knew that there was a love affair between Hansika and suspect Pasidu Chaturanga, who was also a student of his faculty. The witness stated that he had heard that a girl had been stabbed that day and told the Court that he recognised her when the Police showed him the identity card of the deceased.
He further testified that he saw a person like Pasidu walking fast according to the CCTV footage of that day from the location of the murder. Jayasundara, the security officer of the racecourse, testified that he was on duty on the day of the incident.
He said that he saw a woman lying bleeding near the stairs of the scoreboard and there was also a mobile phone nearby. The witness stated that there was no sound and that he had not seen her before and informed the Security Department and the Police.
