CR on a mission to win League Title in their Centenary year

0 70

The CR and FC, who are celebrating a significant landmark in their club history, are determined to make their presence felt in the current Inter-Club League Tournament. The team from Longden Place, who have completed 100 years of excellence, are in with a real chance of making it a memorable season having already produced two inspiring performances in the SLR Nippon Paint League Tournament.

The Red Shirts started their campaign in the most spectacular manner as they brought down their traditional rivals Havelock SC 23-21 in an absolute thriller at Havelock Park. Last week, they nearly created a major sensation by stretching the seven-time defending champions Kandy SC to the maximum before going down fighting 11-13 at Longden Place. The CR and FC have certainly got their act together well early in the current season in contrast to the previous year, where they had a disappointing league with a seventh-place finish.

They would certainly like to forget last year’s performances as they had the ignominy of losing five games and recorded only two wins against the CH and FC (27-22) and Air Force SC (14-10) in addition to a drawn encounter against Army SC (16-16).

However, this time, CR and FC have boosted their side with some fresh talents and their prospects are very high after two stunning performances in the league tournament.

The CR and FC last won the league title way back in 1998 under the Captaincy of Viraj Prashantha and this time they are on a mission to regain the crown, which would double their Centenary year celebrations.

Chathura Senevirathne, Lasindu Karunathilaka, Vageesha Weerasinghe, Suhiru Anthony and Akila Darling are the seasoned campaigners for the CR and FC while Murshid Zubair, Gamunu Chethiya, Thenuka Nanayakkara and Viduna Amaneth are some of the young talented stars in the line-up.
