Criminal who shot at IP killed in shootout with STF

An underworld criminal said to be involved in the shooting and killing of Inspector Takamuni Balendrasinghe, who worked to suppress underworld criminals in the south, died early yesterday morning (12) after clashing with the Police Special Task Force (STF) in a house located in the Mahawatta in Meetiyagoda.

Heingodage Sanjeeva Premakumara Silva (42), a resident of Wadduwa was killed in the shootout. The Police Special Task Force states that he is an underworld kingpin and a registered criminal. He was a former Commando soldier of Sri Lanka Army. He was a member of Karandeniya Sudda’s gang.

The STF has also received information that he is a friend of a person called Raju, who is the brother of Karandeniya Sudda. The victim was waiting near the Galle High Court on the 9 with a firearm ready to kill IP Balendrasinghe.

According to the information received by the Special Task Force, IP Balendrasinghe was scheduled to appear before the Galle High Court in the morning, but he did not come to the court in the morning. Therefore, thinking that IP Balendrasingha will not attend the Court, this person left near the Court and then the Karandeniya Sudda took steps to kill IP Balendrasinghe near the his house at Rathgama that night using another shooter. The STF has started an investigation to find the shooter. A senior a Police officer said the STF will continue its operations until the criminals are arrested.

The suspect named Sanjiva Premakumara Silva of Henegoda was killed in a house belonging to Karandeniya Sudda. According to the information that the suspect was hiding in the deserted house, a team of STF officers went there to check and there was an exchange of fire.

The suspect who was injured in the shooting by the officers of the Police STF has been admitted to the Balapitiya Hospital. But on admission he was already dead. A Police team of the STF has launched this operation based on information received by the officers of the STF’s Organized Crime Unit.
