The Climate Smart Irrigation Agriculture Project (CSIAP), which was implemented under the Agriculture, Land, Livestock, Irrigation, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry and funded by the World Bank, completed rehabilitation works of 470 tanks in selected areas.
The project aims to improve the productivity and build climate resilience of the smallholder agriculture sector in selected areas.
The CSIAP is being implemented in 11 districts covering six provinces, namely the North Western Province, North Central Province, Northern Province, Eastern Province, Uva Province and Southern Province.
In these provinces, 116 tanks were rehabilitated in the Kurunegala district, 28 tanks in the Puttalam district, 56 tanks in the Anuradhapura district, 10 tanks in the Polonnaruwa district, 34 tanks in the Kilinochchi district, 47 tanks in the Mullaitivu district, 29 tanks in the Trincomalee district, 21 tanks in the Batticaloa district, 19 tanks in the Ampara district, 36 tanks in the Monaragala district and 74 tanks in the Hambantota district, enabling 30,000 farming families to cultivate 38,000 acres of land to boost the agro-economy of the country. The CSIAP has prepared plans to rehabilitate another 205 tanks at a cost of Rs. 4,200 million by December 2025.
This will enable 12,000 farming families to cultivate 15,000 acres of land.
