State Counsel Hansa Abeyrathne appearing on behalf of the Criminal Investigations Department yesterday informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that it has been revealed that a house in Dematagoda was purchased in the name of Dematagoda Ruwan’s mother-in-law.
Dematagoda Ruwan was charged with amassing properties worth billions of rupees through the sale of narcotics.The suspect was not produced in Court yesterday.
When the case was taken up, State Counsel Hansa Abeyrathne further stated that statements were recorded from the suspect and his wife. The duo have mentioned in their statement that the aforesaid house has been purchased for Rs.1.5 million.
SC Abeyrathne further pointed out that the value of the house has not been assessed yet. He also emphasized that all properties are discovered through circumstantial evidences. He added that there is no support from the suspect to expedite the investigation.
Ruwan Chamila Prasanna alias ‘Dematagoda Ruwan’ was taken into custody on October 29 by the Illegal Assets and Property Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department(CID).
The State Counsel then urged the Magistrate to further remand the suspect, as investigations were continuing. Attorney Sanjaya Gamage appearing on behalf of the suspect stated that his client has already been in remand for four months. Counsel requested the Magistrate to release his client under any suitable bail condition.
After taking into consideration, the Magistrate rejected the bail application filed on behalf of Ruwan Chamila Prasanna alias’ Dematagoda Ruwan’ and ordered to further remand the suspect until March 08.
Meanwhile, alleged underworld figure Janith Madusanka alias ‘Podi Lassi’ who was charged with having engaged in peddling of illegal drugs with the assistance of a group of Police Narcotics Buraeu (PNB) officers, till March 08.
