0 13

A letter signed by 24 MPs has submitted to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday urging maximum punishment under the Parliament Powers and Privileges Act against SJB MP Chaminda Wijesiri for making false and derogatory allegations in the House about Assistant Secretary General of Parliament Hansa Abeyratne.

Twenty four MPs including Anuradha Jayaratne, Diana Gamage, Rohana Dissanayake, Jagath Pushpakumara. Geetha Kumarasinghe, Prasanna Ranaweera, Arundika Fernando and Ashoka Priyantha have signed this letter.

It has been stated in the letter when Assistant Secretary General of Parliament Hansa Abeyratne was carrying out official work on behalf of the Secretary General in the Chamber between 2 pm and 3 pm on November 10 that MP Chaminda Wijesiri has made such malicious and malicious false accusations against him.

At that time, MP Madhura Withanage was holding the presiding chair and it has been stated the order of the speaker list should have been decided by the Opposition Leader. The Assistant Secretary General does not have any power to decide on that matter and accordingly, Presiding Chairman Madura Withanage has given the opportunity to speak to the next MP in the order of the opposition’s speaker list. At that time, the MP Chaminda Wijesiri made seriously insulting and hateful statements against Hansa Abeyratne and it was broadcast live and it was recorded in the Parliament’s Hansard.

Before Hansa Abeyratne was appointed as Assistant Secretary General to Parliament, he served as Senior State Counsel in the Attorney General’s Department. He led proceedings before the court including preparing, signing and delivering the indictment on behalf of the Attorney General.

The letter also states that Hansa Abeyratne, who was a Senior Counsel, signed a case against MP Chaminda Wijesiri in the Badulla High Court.

There is no connection between the position held by Hansa Abeyratne in Parliament and the position he held in the Attorney General’s Department.

It is stated that that behavior of MP has obstructed Hansa Abeyratne’s parliamentary official duties as MP Chaminda Wijesiri has used his parliamentary privileges in a personal animosity towards him due to Hansa Abeyrathne official duties for the Attorney General as a Senior State Counsel.

Accordingly, it has been further mentioned in the letter that it is requested to take the maximum possible steps in this regard in the Parliament.
