Difficult for any govt, even a new one, to meet current Union demands at this point – Duminda Dissanayake
Even if government employees’ demands for pay increases are acceptable, the government is currently in a position where it is a challenge to comply with their demands, parliamentarian Duminda Dissanayake said.
He stated this at a meeting at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party headquarters with Rajarata University representatives of the Joint Independent Trade Union Centre and the University Technical Officers Association.
After the delegation presented the demands of their union action to Duminda Dissanayake, he said that the government is having a problem meeting those demands.
In addition, Duminda Dissanayake said that trade union activities were occurring throughout the island, but that they had recently taken on a political aspect that was misguiding the union actions.
Duminda continued by saying that it is pointless to conduct union action that would place the people in a terrible situation and that it would be impossible for any government, even if a new one were formed, to meet these demands at this point. The government hopes everyone could make sacrifices in order to transform the Nation from its current position and gradually achieve every aspiration they want, he added.
