Dilapidated school buildings will be repaired in 2024 – Minister

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday (6) that he will take measures to restore dilapidated buildings of schools next year after receiving assistance from institutions including the World Bank. The minister said that information was received regarding 74 dilapidated school buildings and relevant authorities have been advised not to keep children in them and some alternative arrangements have been made to solve all the problems in the school system.

The Minister said this while replying to the question by the Leader of the Opposition regarding unsafe buildings.

The Opposition Leader presented a list of dilapidated buildings in Colombo, Thurstan Vidyalaya, Tangalle, Ibbagamuwa schools and the minister stated that he has obtained the information of all those buildings and obtained information regarding the renovation works of 74 buildings and the estimate is about Rs.10,000 million.

The minister said that the money allocated from next year’s budget will not be enough for the renovation of dilapidated buildings, and estimates have been called before December 15 from nine provinces where dilapidated buildings are located.

The minister said that Rs.30,000 million has been estimated as the rough estimate for the reconstruction of the dilapidated buildings and it is not included in this year’s budget.
