Largest stone inscription found from country
Co-Chairman of the committee appointed to read the largest inscription ever found from the country, Professor Karunasena Hettiarachchi said that the inscription may date back to the first or second BC or even earlier.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo yesterday to make the public aware about the details of the inscription found from Dimbulagala area, Professor Hettiarachchi said it will be possible to add new information to the country’s history.
The preliminary report on the inscription was handed over to the Buddhasasana Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister Vidura Wickramanayake yesterday.
He said that this an inscription contained political, economic, religious information and the stone inscription found from Dimbulagala seems to include many political characters. Professor Hettiarachchi added that this inscription has mentioned about commercial institutions.
“This suggests that there is some development in terms of economic activities in the past”, he said. According to the information with regard to the offering of caves, dagabas, we can come to conclusion in the future by finding out whether the Dagaba where the Buddha’s relics were stored is the Dagaba mentioned here.
Ministry Secretary Somarathna Vidanapathirana, Acting Commissioner General of Archaeological Department Nishanthi Jayasinghe and Assistant Director Buddhi Nagodawithana were present.
