Disparities in pay scales of ISAs and teachers to be rectified, SC told
The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court yesterday (29) that steps will soon be taken to eliminate disparities in the salary scales of Sri Lanka’s teacher instructors, also called In-Service Advisors (ISAs).
This announcement was made by Deputy Solicitor General Uresha De Silva, representing the Attorney General, during a hearing of a fundamental rights petition that highlighted salary discrepancies among ISAs.
The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena and Janak De Silva examined the petition filed by the All Island ISA Union. The Education Ministry Secretary and several others were named as respondents in the case. Attorney Nuwan Bopage, representing the petitioners, pointed out that the ISAs are positioned on a lower pay scale than teachers, leading to significant inequities for those in the instructor roles.
In response, Deputy Solicitor General De Silva assured the court that, while some salary discrepancies do exist between teacher instructors and teachers, efforts are underway to rectify these imbalances.
Following mutual agreement by both parties, the court, noting the statements made, dismissed the petition, granting leave to take future action if necessary.
