Domestic worker, two others arrested

A domestic worker, her daughter and son-in-law have been arrested by the Piliyandala Police for allegedly withdrawing Rs 5 million secretly from the ATM card of a retired bank officer, under whom she worked while he was hospitalized.

The money had been withdrawn in parts on a few occasions.

The retired bank officer had given the ATM Card and its secret code to the domestic worker, who had been working at his house for about 11 years, to get money for expenses of his treatment when he was hospitalized. However, when the retired officer returned home upon his discharge from the hospital, he realized that Rs. 5 million had been withdrawn in portions from his account without informing him.

Following a complaint to the Police, the Police found CCTV evidence that the suspects had been withdrawing money from the ATM for a period of about six months.

During interrogation, the domestic worker had admitted that she gave the ATM card to her daughter and son-in-law and they used the money in it to buy gold jewellery, get a house for rent, renovate her mother’s house, go on trips and to buy new clothes.

The suspects are residents of Modara, Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa.
