Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mahinda Amaraweera said that, if people try to experiment in selecting the next President at this year’s Presidential election, the country would again face a major economic decline within five months.

Minister Amaraweera said this at a press conference held yesterday (13) at the election campaign office for Ranil Wickremesinghe’s victory.

“President Ranil Wickremesinghe took over the country at a difficult time where the country had completely collapsed. I was entrusted with the production of food for the country. At that time, Rs 29,000 million had to be paid as loans to fertiliser companies. All that money was paid in two years.

Also, the President, as the Minister of Finance, gave Rs 50,000 to farmers to buy fertiliser for 5 cropping seasons, from 2022 Yala season to 2024 Yala season. So we were able to become self-sufficient in rice within two years.

Neither Sajith nor Anura have any plan to recover this country. If the promises they have made are to be fulfilled, if they come to power, only the US$ 5 billion we collected will be available to implement them. It will be over in five months. Then there will be fuel queues and gas queues again in this country.

This time we can’t experiment at the Presidential election in choosing the next President. If that happens, the country will become a lake of blood. Sajith says he will shed his last drop of blood. Leaders are not those who shed their blood, but those who make decisions freely. The country needs a leader who manages the time and makes good decisions. There is only one such leader, and that is current President Ranil Wickremesinghe.”
