Third Woman Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

National People’s Power (NPP) MP Dr. Harini Amarasuriya was sworn-in as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

She was sworn-in before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. Dr. Amarasuriya also took oaths as the Justice, Education, Labour, Industries, Science and Technology, Health and Investments Minister.

Premier Amarasuriya has made history as the 16th person to hold the position and She is the third female Prime Minister of Sri Lanka after Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Kumaratunga. She has been a National List Member of Parliament for National People’s Power since 2020. She previously served as a senior lecturer at the Social Studies Department at the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Harini is well-known for her research on youth unemployment, gender inequality, child protection and inefficiencies in the Sri Lankan education system.

She completed her PhD degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh. She also published books and conducted research on youth, politics, dissent, activism, gender, development, state-society relations, child protection, globalisation and development.

Harini joined the National Intellectuals Organisation in 2019 and campaigned for the NPP Candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake during the 2019 Sri Lankan Presidential Election. On August 12, 2020, she was nominated and appointed by the NPP as the national list candidate to enter the 16th Parliament of Sri Lanka following the 2020 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya yesterday said that she is thankful for the trust people have placed in her team. She said so while leaving the Presidential Secretariat after swearing-in as the Prime Minister before President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The Premier further said that the hopes of the people will be fulfilled and the trust placed by the people will be further assured.

She also said that the ministries assigned to her will be taken over promptly and their work will be carried out in a proper way.
