Driver arrested for USD theft

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) said that a person who stole US$ 4,000 (Rs. 1.3 million) while working as a driver of a millionaire businessman, was arrested while hiding in Katunayake area posing as a mason.

Police said that the complainant businessman, a resident of Kotte had gone to a temple on August 24 while he was returning from Pelmadulla area after attending his daughter’s baby’s first food feeding ceremony.

According to the police, after the businessman’s arrival, the suspect, who was the driver, had told the businessman that he had received a phone call from his home saying that his child was sick.

At that time, the businessman had given the driver Rs.5,000 and told the driver to go and see to the child and sent him away.

Police said the businessman had felt suspicious and when he checked his travel bag which was in the vehicle, he found that the 4,000 US dollars he had was missing and filed a complaint with the Ratnapura Police.

Although more than a month has passed regarding the relevant complaint, a proper investigation had not been carried out, and the businessman had made a complaint to Western Province SDIG Deshbandu Tennakoon.

Subsequently in accordance with instructions given to the Colombo Crimes Division Sub-Inspector J.K.K.Jayaneththi and a team of officers had conducted a lengthy investigation and they had succeeded in uncovering information regarding the suspect.

Police said that the suspect was arrested while working as a mason on the Katunayake Airport Road while living in a room for which he was paying a monthly rent of Rs.4,500.

During the lengthy interrogation of the arrested suspect, it had been stated that he had given the money to a gold jewellery shop in Ambalantota area on two occasions and obtained Rs. 1.2 million. According to this information, Police found the money. The 47-year-old suspect, is a father of two. Investigations are being carried out by the Colombo Crimes Division.
