Drugs suppliers will be settled Rs. 4 Bn this month

Health and Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana told Parliament yesterday that there is around Rs.4 billion in outstanding payments to drugs suppliers exceeding 90 days and the monies will be paid within this month.

The Minister also stated that the arrears will be paid in a manner which will not hinder the supply of medicines. He was responding to a question raised by SJB MP S.M.Marikkar. The Minister said that 850 medicines will be procured and 19 of them are in short supply and will be purchased locally. The Minister said that over Rs.156 million have to be paid to the gauze suppliers and the relevant officials have been instructed to give them priority and make the payments and within this month more than 50 percent of the payments will be completed.

The Minister said Rs.180 billion has been allocated for the purchase of medicines this year as the highest amount in history.
