The Sri Lanka Cancer Society (SLCS) highlighted that all kinds of cancers including breast, prostate, cervical, oral and lung cancers could be prevented with early detection.
Speaking at a cancer awareness programme conducted in Colombo SLCS, Public Education Officer Merril Perera highlighted that cancer has become the second leading cause of deaths worldwide and said the number of global cancer deaths in 2040 will go up to 16.3 million.
He said the main objective of SLCS is to conduct cancer awareness programmes in schools, public and private sector institutions and also community centres to educate people about the seriousness of cancers.
Merril Perera also highlighted that tobacco causes many cancers in the human body and avoiding cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products is the best solution to get rid of this disease.
“There is also a possibility of getting cancers due to passive smoking,” he said.
He further said if people avoid any form of tobacco product they can prevent from getting cancers in lungs, voice box, mouth, throat, urinary bladder, kidney, liver, stomach, pancreas, rectum etc.
Merril Perera also adviced people to consume more fruits, vegetables and grains and also engaged in physical exercises to reduce the risk of getting cancers.
He also highlighted breast cancers of women and said the SLCS very often conducts special seminars to educate females especially for young girls how to identify breast cancers.
It is reported that breast cancer affects nearly 4,000 women in Sri Lanka annually.
He highlighted major signs of breast cancers as lumps in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling or irritation of the breast skin, swelling of all parts of the breast.
