EC Gazettes expenditure limits for candidates and parties

The Election Commission (EC) has released the amount that can be spent by one candidate and one party for campaign activities related to the Parliamentary Elections scheduled for November 14.

Accordingly, for campaigning related to the General Election, the maximum expenditure limit that a Colombo district candidate can spend is Rs. 5,750,000. The maximum amount that can be spent by one political party or Independent group is Rs.79,493,756. A National List candidate can spend only Rs. 34,698.

The least affordable constituency is the Vanni electoral district where a candidate can spend only Rs. 1,673,243. The maximum amount that can be spent by one political party or an independent group is Rs 9,963,964. A national list candidate can spend only Rs. 4,327. The relevant Gazette notification is scheduled to be issued today (18) and the Election Commission has decided the limit of expenses that can be spent on election campaigns in accordance with Section 3 of the Election Expenses Regulation Act No. 3 of 2023.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has requested all astrologers to refrain from making astrological predictions in a way that favours the candidates in the upcoming General Eelection. The Election Commission emphasised that it is a serious offence according to election laws to make predictions in a way that favours various candidates.

The Commission also said that they are going to prosecute the astrologers who break the election laws and publicise predictions they make regarding General Election candidates.
