EC gets tough on candidates misusing airtime

Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake says that candidates contesting the upcoming Presidential Election cannot use the airtime given to them to promote another candidate.

He said that candidates should provide the TV footage and the audio tape containing content expected to be presented to the people and should get prior approval of the Election Commission.

The Election Commissioner General said this while participating as a guest in a media training workshop organized by Intenivus Institute yesterday (31) at the Royal Mall Hotel in Kandy.

He said that some candidates give nominations with the intention of supporting another candidate and the relevant decision was taken taking into account the experience of the previous elections.

Ratnayake also stated that it is planned to give the candidates who have been nominated for the Presidential Election the opportunity to address the people through radio and TV channels from yesterday (1).
