On the second day of the crucial fifth Ashes encounter at The Oval, England’s bowlers, led by Stuart Broad and Mark Wood, put on an impressive display with tight and attacking spells, effectively shattering Australia’s hopes.

The Australian batters, who had resumed the second day at an overnight score of 61-1, found it tough going against the relentless English attack and were restricted to 186/7 at tea on the second day.

Consistent Steven Smith remained unbeaten at 40, while skipper Pat Cummins had just joined him at the crease. The trouble for Australia began early when overnight opener Usman Khawaja was trapped lbw off Stuart Broad’s bowling. Broad continued his impressive form by later dismissing Travis Head for 4, caught behind by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

England 1st innings 283 all out in 54.4 overs
