Enhancing Awareness of Joint Crediting Mechanism

A significant step towards bolstering sustainable development and fostering a low-carbon growth partnership between Japan and Sri Lanka was marked Tuesday (29) at the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Study Session held in Colombo. The event was co-organised by the Embassy of Japan, with the Ministry of Environment in Sri Lanka and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) under the theme of enhancing awareness about the JCM initiative.

The JCM Study Session witnessed the participation of more than 70 individuals from over 30 companies, including representatives from both Sri Lankan and Japanese entities. This event aims to elucidate the intricacies of the JCM, fostering greater understanding and engagement with this pivotal framework.

Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, Katsuki, along with Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, commenced the event with their opening remarks that encapsulated the profound importance of the JCM initiative.

The core of the event featured a comprehensive lecture delivered by Pacific Consultants, aimed at elucidating the JCM scheme’s nuances, its potential benefits for both countries, and its overarching role in the broader context of environmental conservation and sustainable development.

JETRO Colombo Resident Representative , Oi, concluded the event by introducing views of Japanese companies on environmental sector and expectations for investment in decarbonisation.

The collaborative nature of this study session underscores the commitment of both Japan and Sri Lanka to create a brighter, greener future through shared knowledge and expertise. By fostering understanding and fostering greater engagement with the JCM, the event set the stage for numerous Sri Lankan and Japanese companies to embark on a journey of sustainable growth while minimising their carbon footprint.
