The Esala Festival of Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya concluded with the final procession parading the streets on Sunday night.
The procession concluded at Kirivehera following a unique ritual at the temple premises.
The ritual which dates back to the era of King Dutugemunu where parts of the offerings during the festival being was offered to Buddha and the Chief Incum bent of Kataragama Kirivehera was performed by Basnayake Nilame Dishan Gunasekara.
The placing of the Sacred Relics Casket during the final procession was performed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and President’s Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayaka.
The Chief Incumbent of the Kirivehera Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Kobawaka Dhamminda Thera performed the religious rites.
