The Agriculture Department urged farmers to pay close attention to three insect pests that are currently spreading and damaging paddy cultivation.
About 22,000 hectares of paddy cultivation in several districts of the island have been affected by the three species of insects namely White Back Plant Hopper, Gray Plant Hopper and Leaf Curl worm. Agriculture Director General Malathi Parasuraman informs farmers that if these insects are present in their fields, they should immediately inform Agriculture Department officials and act according to the instructions given by agriculture consultants.
Parasuraman also said that all these insect damages can be prevented and by now the agricultural consultants and other officials in all areas have been informed in this regard. Also, the Director General mentions that special teams of agriculture have been deployed for field inspection.
Do not apply insecticides that are inferior to the condition or follow the recommendations made by those who are not knowledgeable about this. Do not mix insecticides with other types. Parasuraman also mentioned that it will not be possible to achieve proper results by applying insecticides in such instances because the pests have the ability to withstand harmful chemicals (Chemical Resistance). Therefore, the Director General emphasizes that steps should be taken to apply only pesticides recommended by Agriculture Department.
