Father remanded over assault on principal till 30

Balapitiya Magistrate Hansadeva Samaradivakara yesterday (20) ordered that the suspect who was arrested by the Ambalangoda Police for assaulting the principal of Ambalangoda Sri Devananda Vidyalaya in the principal’s office, be remanded until June 30.

The Magistrate also informed the Ambalangoda Police to investigate the incident further and submit a report to the court on the next court date. Remanded was a 44 year old who resides in Pansala Road, Hagalla, Kosgoda named Wijemuni Chatura Mihiraj de Soysa.

According to a complaint lodged by the Principal of Devananda Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda Janaka Peduruhewa to the Ambalangoda Police, the suspect was arrested and presented to the court. He further said in the complaint that while he was doing his official duties in the office this person came and assaulted him last Monday (19).

It has been confirmed in the police investigations that the attack was carried out due to an issue based on the school’s badminton game.Police investigations have confirmed that the suspect’s son is engaged in both badminton and cricket at school and the dispute arose out of a decision not to participate in a badminton match due to economic and health reasons.

It has also been confirmed in the police investigation that the suspect claims that his son was assaulted by the instructor in charge of badminton Derwin Priyanka.

Investigation also confirmed that the suspect assaulted the principal saying that justice was not done by the principal.

Derwin Priyanka de Silva who is said to have attacked the son of the suspect who attacked the principal, has also complained to the Ambalangoda Police yesterday (20) about an incident of an attack by an unknown person in the early hours of yesterday (20). It is further stated in the complaint that the attack took place yesterday (20) at around 5.45 am. The Ambalangoda Police say that no one has been arrested in connection with this assault incident and no information has been revealed so far.

The Ambalangoda Police also say that the police believe that the attack may have been carried out by the party that attacked the principal and investigations are being conducted in this regard.

Derwin Priyanka de Silva, who was assulted, is currently admitted to the Balapitiya Base Hospital for treatment.

Derwin Priyanka, the 9th year student of the school whom he allegedly assaulted, and the principal Janaka Peduruhewa, are currently receiving treatment in the ward of the Balapitiya Basic Hospital.

A spokesperson of the Balapitiya Base Hospital also stated that the principal has bruises on his face and neck.
