Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Vijitha Herath said that the fertiliser subsidy of Rs. 25,000 for paddy farmers will be provided on Monday (14) starting from the Ampara district.
He was speaking at a media conference held yesterday at the Government Information Department.
The Maha season is about to start and we are going to provide this fertiliser subsidy to the people of the Ampara district by Monday next week. After that, we will provide the relevant subsidy to the farmers in Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Mahiyanganaya and Mahaweli regions,” he said.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed the Treasury to provide an allowance of Rs. 25,000 per hectare to paddy farmers for the Maha season of 2024/25 with the intention of streamlining the process and providing timely support to those in the agricultural sector.
He has also instructed to implement a fuel subsidy for the fishing community, effective from October 01, with the intention of boosting the fishing industry and lower production costs for fishermen.
But the Election Commission suspend the increased fertiliser subsidy till the end of the General Election and later the Election Commission stated it has no objections to the move saying that this decision was initially made by the previous government, which the Election Commission withdrew as it was seen as a move to promote a candidate.
