The Independent Association of Tea Manufacturers on Wednesday (1) requested Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, to provide the fertilizer required for tea cultivation at a concessional price.
They made this request at a discussion held at the Plantation Industry Ministry.
Government-owned Lanka Fertilizer Company and Colombo Commercial Fertilizer Company are currently producing a special mixed fertilizer for plantation crops including tea, cinnamon and coconut etc. This fertilizer is very suitable for tea cultivation and the Minister discussed with Dr. Jagath Perera, the Chairman of the two Government-owned fertilizer companies, regarding providing the fertilizer to the tea industry at a subsidized price.
Accordingly, the Chairman agreed to provide the fertilizer required for tea cultivation in Sri Lanka at the same price as the company is currently producing.
Accordingly, the fertilizer problem related to tea cultivation for several years will be resolved and the Tea Industry Association expressed its gratitude to the Minister for taking steps in this regard.
The Minister also said that the Agriculture Ministry has decided to give permission to any organisation that comes forward to supply fertilizers to the agricultural sector, and said that the Tea Industry Association can give permission if it comes forward to provide the fertilizer required for the tea industry.
