Firearms issued to civilians to be submitted before January 20 – Defence Ministry
The Defence Ministry has announced that all licensed firearms and ammunition issued to civilians that have not been surrendered and submitted for inspection and audit so far should be handed over by January 20, 2025.
The Defence Ministry has informed through all electronic and print media that all types of firearms and ammunition that had been provided by the Defence Ministry to civilians for their safety should be surrendered to the Government before November 21, 2024 for the purpose of quantitative review.
Referring to its original announcement, the Defence Ministry stated that about 85 percent of the licence holders have already surrendered their firearms. If those citizens wish to continue to possess their firearms for their safety, they have been informed to submit appeals to the Defence Ministry explaining the need before October 30, 2024, and the licence holders who have submitted such appeals have been informed to submit the relevant documents along with their firearms to the Ministry for inspection and review. The Defence Ministry has decided to provide only one firearm per person for personal safety which will be provided based on security intelligence reports. Accordingly, the Defence Ministry has announced that the review of all appeals submitted for possession of firearms and the relevant firearm inspections are scheduled to be completed on January 20, 2025 and the licence holders have been requested to submit their firearms for inspection before the deadline.
