First-ever Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) pre-congress workshop in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka College of Oncologists (SLCO) invites specialists and trainees in the fields of Haematology and Oncology from SAARC and Middle Eastern countries to take part in their Annual Academic Sessions 2024 scheduled to be held from October 10 – 14, 2024 at Hotel Galadari, Colombo.

Issuing a communique recently SLCO Secretary Dr. Buddhika Somawardena said that this programme will be an excellent opportunity for specialists and trainees in the fields of Haematology and Oncology to upgrade their knowledge and skills, and for delegates to foster international collaborations.

He further said that this event aims to foster collaboration, update knowledge, and enhance clinical practices among the oncology fraternity in Sri Lanka.

“Our goal is to elevate patient care standards through the dissemination of new knowledge and by building stronger networks among healthcare professionals.” Dr. Somawardena said.

The SLCO is the premier professional body dedicated to advancing the field of oncology in Sri Lanka. Established with the goal of enhancing cancer care across the nation, SLCO brings together specialists in medical, clinical, radiation, and surgical oncology to foster a collaborative environment for learning, research, and clinical excellence.

This year’s programme features the first-ever Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) pre-congress workshop in Sri Lanka, endorsed by the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT).

This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn from leading global experts in stem cell transplantation, covering comprehensive aspects of HSCT, from conditioning regimens and graft management to managing infections and quality management of HSCT units.

The workshop is designed to provide a 360-degree perspective, particularly beneficial for haematologists, transplant specialists, and postgraduate trainees given the growing interest in HSCT in Sri Lanka. This programme is expected to enhance the standards of care in HSCT in the country.

A pre-congress session led by two British Clinical Oncologists is scheduled to be conducted on radiotherapy contouring for lung and prostate cancer cases, providing hands-on experience and interactive discussions.

This session aims to improve practical radiotherapy knowledge among clinical oncologists and trainees.

Acute Oncology Workshop will also be conducted in collaboration with the Ceylon College of Physicians, Intensivists, Sri Lanka College of Internal Medicine, and Sri Lanka College of Anaesthesiologists; this workshop will involve case- based discussions and small group sessions for doctors as well as nurses. This aims to improve practical knowledge among doctors and nurses in acute oncology scenarios that they come across in today’s clinical setting.

A Hepatic Oncology Session has been organised with the Sri Lanka Hepato Pancreato Biliary Association; this workshop includes a live liver resection experience, offering practical knowledge from a multidisciplinary expert panel.

The main congress will feature six symposia, five plenary sessions and a keynote lecture, supported by a distinguished faculty of nearly 20 international and 30 local speakers and moderators.

The sessions are designed to promote the exchange of ideas, share the latest research, and discuss innovative treatments and management strategies in oncology.

Beyond the academic offerings, the SLCO invites participants to explore the natural beauty and rich culture of Sri Lanka. From the serene beaches to the lush hill country, Sri Lanka offers a unique blend of experiences that will captivate your heart.
