First postal voting day peaceful – Polls CG

Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said the first postal voting day for the 2024 Parliamentary Elections was held in a peaceful manner yesterday (30).

The Commissioner General requested all candidates to maintain a peaceful atmosphere during the upcoming Parliamentary Election, at a press conference held yesterday.

He said the period running up to the Parliamentary Elections which will be held on November 14 has been very peaceful since the day the Election was called by the Election Commission.

The Election Commissioner further said that it was reported that posters and advertisements had been posted in some areas and the Police will be requested to remove those advertisements.

A total of 738,050 have qualified to cast their votes through postal voting for the upcoming Parliamentary Election out of the 759,210 postal voting applications received with 21,160 applications which were rejected with an increase of 25,731 postal voting applications received for the General Election compared to the recently concluded Presidential Election, Ratnayake said.

Postal voting was conducted yesterday in all District Secretariat Offices, Election Commission offices, police stations and all offices belonging to the Police Department and those employed in these offices who couldn’t vote yesterday can vote on November 1 as well. The Election Commission stated that postal votes can be marked at the Tri-Forces camps and all other government institutions by those state employees on November 1 and 4.
