The Hambantota Public Health Inspector’s office stated that 170 people who attended a wedding reception held at a well-known hotel in Hambantota suffered food poisoning.
According to information from the Public Health Inspector’s office, 14 people including three doctors who attended the wedding reception are receiving treatment at the Debarawewa Base Hospital, eight persons at the Lunugamwehera Regional Hospital, three at the Colombo National
Hospital, five at the Ambalantota Hospital and 30 in other hospitals.
It is said that this wedding reception was held on March 11 in celebration of the marriage of a child of a businessman residing near the Mattala Expressway entrance and 280 guests had attended.
It has been found that the cause of this emergency at the wedding party was a problem with food.
The food was also provided by the hotel. The management of the hotel had said that the hotel is not obliged to take any measures in case of illness.
A businessman who was at the reception said that 200 people had been invited to the hotel for dinner that day and since 280 people had come, the bride and groom and their close relatives had refrained from eating.
He said that doctors, lawyers and other well-known businessmen ate the meal, and all became ill.
