Former ANCL Chairman, senior public servant Lionel Fernando passes away
Lionel Fernando, a distinguished public servant and former Chairman of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. (ANCL), passed away on Saturday.
He was the Chairman of the ANCL in 1994. He was the Government Agent, Jaffna, Governor of the North Eastern Provinces, and Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Malaysia.
He was also the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Netherlands and France. His extensive diplomatic and administrative experience also included tenures as the Foreign Secretary, Ceylon Shipping Corporation Chairman and National Insurance Corporation Chairman. Fernando was the husband of actress and playwright late Somalatha Subasinghe. The public can pay their respects to Fernando at Jayaratne Restpect Home from 9.30 am on today (8). The funeral will take place at the Borella cemetery at 5.30 pm today.
