Former President’s staffer remanded over fraud

Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (31) ordered that a person who was a media secretary of former President Maithreepala Sirisena be remanded until November 13 for defrauding Rs.500,000 by promising that the complainant would be sent to Canada.

The Kompanna Veediya police presented the suspect to court and requested that the suspect be remanded as evidence may be influenced. The suspect is a resident of Polonnaruwa. Police informed court that after an investigation made according to a complaint made by the secretary of Sri Lanka Freedom Party Polonnaruwa district leader Wasantha Jayawardena, the suspect was arrested.

Police further told the court that fifty thousand rupees had been deposited in the suspect’s bank account and that the rest of the money had been deposited as money exchange, and the suspect has given several residence addresses and it has been confirmed that the suspect does not reside at the given address in Boralesgamuwa.
