Sri Lanka’s Malinda Pushpakumara has entered elite company in domestic cricket, becoming only the fourth Sri Lankan to reach 1,000 wickets in first-class cricket.

Pushpakumara achieved the milestone to join an exclusive list led by Muttiah Muralidaran (1,374 wickets), Rangana Herath (1,080), and Dinuka Hettiarachchi (1,001). The achievement underlines his longevity and consistency across a long first-class career.

Pushpakumara’s career is further distinguished by his exceptional strike rate. At the time he reached the milestone, he was ranked 11th on the all-time list for strike rate among bowlers with 1,000 or more first-class wickets.

Significantly, none of the bowlers with a better strike rate than Pushpakumara played their cricket after the First World War, highlighting the rarity of his achievement in the modern era. (Newswire)
