The Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of the Jaffna Division has taken steps to suspend four police officers who were arrested and remanded in connection with the death of a suspect arrested for robbery. A sub-inspector and three constables attached to the Jaffna Vaddukoddai Police Station have been suspended.
While these four police officers were attached to the Vaddukoddai Police Station, a 25-year-old youth named Nagarasa Alex, a resident of that Police division, was arrested on November 8, in connection with a robbery.
The suspect was brought along with another who was arrested over the same robbery to the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court and then jailed due to objections made in the Court by the Jaffna Police.
On November 20, the suspect was admitted to the Jaffna Hospital due to ill health. He died shortly after admission to hospital.
The suspect’s relatives alleged that the death was caused by severe beating by the Police, resulting in serious injuries.
The Police took steps to arrest the four police suspects involved in the alleged attack of the youth while in prison, after the post-mortem investigation revealed that death was due to heavy damage caused to his kidney as a result of assault.
The Court ordered these four police officers to be remanded until December 4.
