The Western Provincial Council approved the master plan to formally develop school infrastructure with modern facilities, to be implemented by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) as per the advice of Urban Development and Housing Minister and Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga.
This approval has been received at a discussion held on September 16 at the Western Provincial Council auditorium in Battaramulla, led by the Minister.
This plan had previously received the approval of Western Province Governor Marshal of the Air Force Roshan Goonetileke.
Minister Ranatunga emphasized that the pilot project will be implemented at three selected schools in the Gampaha and Minuwangoda education zones. Most of the school buildings in the Gampaha district are currently in a dilapidated condition. There is no money for the schools or the regional education offices to renovate these buildings. Therefore, only minor temporary building renovations are often done.
The development plan includes the construction of new buildings to suit the needs of the schools and also the demolishing of dangerous buildings in schools. Accordingly, the chartered engineers and architects of the UDA visited all the schools in Gampaha district for a period of four months and prepared this development plan.
The Minister also mentioned that this development plan will be updated every five years.
He said that they have prepared this development plan targeting 24 schools in Gampaha Education Division and 34 schools in Minuwangoda Education Division.
Minister Ranatunga emphasized at this discussion that after the development of the education sector, the Western Provincial Governor has requested to implement such a development plan for the development of the health sector in the Western Province.
